What each tag does
The Open Graph properties come from ogp.me. Platform limits come from each platform’s own documentation.
- title and description
- The title element and the description meta tag. Google says it truncates titles and snippets to fit the device width and documents no character limit.
- canonical
- A link rel="canonical" tag with the URL you enter, written only when the URL field is filled.
- og:title, og:type, og:image, og:url
- The four properties ogp.me lists as required for every page. The generator fills og:type with website until you pick another basic type: article, book or profile.
- og:description and og:site_name
- Optional Open Graph properties. A one sentence description and the name of the site the page belongs to.
- og:image:alt
- A structured property of og:image, a description of what the image shows. It is written only when an image is set.
- twitter:card, twitter:site, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image
- Tags X reads first, falling back to the og:* tags when a twitter:* tag is missing. summary_large_image asks for a large card image, and twitter:site is your account handle.

Frequently Asked Questions
A form that turns a title, description, URL and image into the meta tags a page needs in its head. This one writes the title element, the description and canonical tags, the Open Graph tags and the Twitter Card tags, and leaves out any field you do not fill.
The Open Graph protocol at ogp.me lists four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. og:description and og:site_name are optional.
X reads the twitter:* tags and falls back to the og:* tags when one is missing, so og tags alone can work. The generator writes both, which lets you set twitter:card to summary_large_image for a large card image.
X documents a maximum of 70 characters for the title and 200 for the description. WhatsApp says 80 characters of description will suffice, as guidance rather than a hard cut. LinkedIn, Facebook, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Bluesky, Threads and Pinterest document no character limit, and the preview next to the form shows your text on the platform you pick.
Facebook recommends 1200×630 pixels, and LinkedIn documents a 1200×627 minimum with a 1.91:1 ratio. X documents a 2:1 ratio for large card images. The social image sizes table lists the sources.
Inside the head element of the page, in the HTML the server sends. iMessage does not run JavaScript, so its metadata has to be in the page itself. After publishing, run the URL through the OG image checker to see the tags as a crawler reads them.
