How iMessage reads your tags
Tags
Apple documents og:title for the title of the link preview and og:image for the image, and recommends og:site_name for the site name.
Title
Titles should be short and specific enough to distinguish different pages on the same website. Apple gives no character limit.
Image
Images should be at least 900 pixels in width, and images less than 150 pixels in width may be ignored or presented as icons. Apple advises avoiding text in preview images, since they may be displayed at varying sizes.
Fetching
Link previews do not follow meta redirects or run JavaScript, so metadata must be available directly on the linked page. Server-side redirects are followed.
Size guidelines
The main resource at the link is limited to 1 MB and the total size of associated resources to 10 MB. Apple describes these as guidelines that may change.
Frequently asked questions
Without image metadata, the preview is a plain bubble with the page title and domain.
Apple documents that link previews do not run JavaScript. The metadata has to be on the linked page itself.
